After a scoreless first half, Oregon (7-1-1) soccer fell to No. 9 Washington State (8-0) at the Cougars’ home field in Pullman, Washington, on Thursday night, 2-1 unable to break the Cougars’ eight-game win streak.
In the first half, both teams earned three saves, with Oregon redshirt senior goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir saving all three for Oregon. The Ducks attempted eight shots on goal while the Cougars managed nine, but neither team had any luck as they entered the second half.
However, just under three minutes into the second, Washington State sophomore forward Elyse Bennett scored the first goal of the game.
Oregon senior forward and primary scoring threat, with a team-high of six goals on the season, Marissa Everrett went out early in the second with a right leg injury before returning to play later in the half. In the meantime, her team scored its first goal of the game.
In the 57th minute, the Ducks scored off a free kick by senior midfielder Sofia Chambers to tie the Cougars 1-1. Ricocheting off Washington State’s Maegan O’Neill’s foot, the point was not credited to Chambers, but as an own-goal on O’Neill.
O’Neill recovered the point for her team with a header goal for the Cougars to give them their second goal and second lead of the night. Oregon was unable to recover, resulting in the loss to Washington State.
Oregon finished with 14 attempted shots, six on goal and Hinriksdottir earned seven saves. Washington State contested with 18 shots, 9 of which were on goal and goalkeeper Rachel Thompson earned five saves.
Despite this week’s RPI rankings, which ranked Oregon No. 14 and Washington State No. 27, the Cougars added another game to their win streak, now at nine.
On Sunday, the Ducks will travel to Seattle to play the Washington Huskies at Husky Soccer Stadium at 2 p.m. PT.
