Fall is when the warmth of summer quickly slips away and our bodies begin to encourage us to tack on fat to keep us warm. Thanksgiving is still about a month away, but there are plenty of other delicious fall morsels to keep us occupied. Treats like pumpkin pie and pumpkin cookies go without saying, but here are some less orthodox fall favorites:
Steak and potatoes is a wonderful meal any time of year, but something about being warm and full in the autumn season, and the smell of golden Yukon potatoes cooking next to some skirt steak doesn’t hurt.
Clam chowder is not just a treat for the Oregon Coast anymore. If made to buttery perfection, chowder can help make a rainy autumn into a fantastic lazy afternoon.
Hot cocoa is a winter delight, but a dash of cinnamon somehow brings thoughts of fall to mind. Pumpkin spice also can help drag a simple hot chocolate beverage into seasonal stardom.
Sweet potatoes are definitely an acquired taste, but everything tastes better fried. Sweet potato fries are crispy on the outside, and sweet and creamy on the inside. Unlike regular French fries, sweet potato fries taste better without the use of condiments.
Rice pudding is often considered a holiday treat, but it’s never too soon in the season to whip up a batch. With only rice, sugar and milk necessary to make this simple dessert, it’s one of the few sweets that can be made by scratch by literally anyone, regardless of cooking skills.
And even this close to Thanksgiving, it’s really never too early to practice cooking (and consuming) turkey.
