Executive appointee Xavier Aranda sent an e-mail to ASUO Vice President Getachew Kassa on Wednesday night explaining his absence at two ASUO Senate meetings, where Senate planned to vote on his confirmation to Senate Seat 14.
“I am sorry to tell you that I am now in California due to family issues that have recently taken place that made me drop the fall quarter at the UO and return to California,” Aranda said in the e-mail.
Aranda first appeared before Senate on Oct. 28, but conversation about his being both a National Student Exchange student and an ethnic studies major led Senate to postpone his appointment until they clarified with Constitution Court whether he could occupy the social science senate seat.
At the two following Senate meetings, Aranda was not present and his absence was not accounted for. At the meeting on Wednesday, his second consecutive absence, Senate voted the confirmation down in a vote of 0-15.
In an e-mail, Aranda said he was “so sorry for this bad news” and he felt like he had let Senate down.
Kassa said Senate Seat 14 is open once again. The Executive has 30 days from last Wednesday to decide an appointment for this seat.
