Oregon sophomore Cathrine Kraayeveld became the first Oregon basketball player, man or woman, to earn recognition from the Pacific-10 Conference this season.
After a 16-point, eight-rebound performance against Oregon State on Saturday, Kraayeveld was named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Kraayeveld, who also had three assists and one blocked shot Saturday, contested Felicia Ragland’s potential game-winning shot during the final seconds of regulation in Oregon’s 84-83 overtime victory against the Beavers.
“I just tried to go up and block it without fouling her, and I think I got part of the ball,” Kraayeveld of Ragland’s missed shot.
In her last 10 games, Kraayeveld has been Miss Consistency, collecting 113 rebounds and 113 points. Additionally, Kraayeveld has five double-doubles this season, all coming in Pac-10 play. Her 154 rebounds (9.6 per game) conference play is just two less than the conference leader, Stanford’s Nicole Powell, who has 156 in 16 games.
“It’s nice that I’ve been able to do it consistently, that it hasn’t been sporadic,” Kraayeveld said. “I’ve really been working hard on (rebounding), and it’s really helping the team.”
For the season, the 6-foot-3 forward from Kirkland, Wash., is averaging 9.2 points and 7.8 boards per game and leads the team in shooting (.514).
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Kraayeveld’s career and 27th all time for the women’s team. Jamie Craighead was the only Duck to earn Player of the Week honors last year.
Kraayeveld heads home to Seattle this weekend as the Ducks end their regular season against Washington on Saturday. Oregon (14-11 overall, 9-7 Pac-10) defeated the Huskies (16-9, 11-5) at McArthur Court on Dec. 28.
