On Feb. 27, Theta Chi joined two other UO fraternities — Delta Sigma Phi and Phi Delta Theta — in interim suspension from fraternity social events. The latter two had previously been suspended due to alleged “druggings” at fraternity social events.
The interim suspensions follow a suspension of fraternity events with alcohol until April 15, which was publicly announced by UO Fraternity and Sorority Life on Feb. 22.
The UO FSL website made no statement on the reason for the Theta Chi suspension.
All three fraternities will remain on interim suspension “pending the outcome of the student conduct process,” according to FSL’s website.
In emails obtained by the Daily Emerald, UO’s Office of the Dean of Students said it suspended Delta Sigma and Phi Delta due to several allegations where students “were drugged or otherwise unknowingly ingested substances” while at fraternity parties.
In an email sent Jan. 26, Delta Sigma faces “allegations of at least three incidents where students were drugged,” which took place at the chapter’s facility on Jan. 10, Jan. 15 and Jan. 19.
The alleged drugging at a Phi Delta chapter live-out occurred “on or around February 10, 2024 where one or more students were drugged,” the suspension email said.
A Eugene Weekly article published earlier today said that since January, UO officials have received reports of nine people “unknowingly ingesting substances that caused some level of incapacitation or need for medical care’ while attending events sponsored by fraternities.”
Delta Sigma and Phi Delta attended preliminary meetings to determine whether UO would uphold the interim suspensions. Following Delta Sigma’s preliminary meeting on Jan. 29, Dianne Tanjuaquio, the Associate Dean of Students, upheld its interim suspension but allowed Executive Board and Chapter meetings to continue.
After Phi Delta’s preliminary meeting on Feb. 19, Tanjuaquio made the same decision, upholding the suspension and allowing executive and chapter meetings. In an email on Feb. 20, Tanjuaquio granted an exception to the suspension, allowing Phi Delta to host its “Dad’s Weekend” that was “restricted to members of the chapter and their fathers/immediate family.”
In its March 5 meeting, the UO Interfraternity Council discussed the suspension of events with alcohol and the action items to be created including sober monitor training and a guest list system for events. The council said it is working with the university to develop the agreed upon changes.
The Emerald has requested records from the Eugene Police Department regarding the allegations made against several fraternities.
