Although the outcome already seemed guaranteed, a 71-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Gary Bryant Jr. was the final nail in the coffin for Arizona State in No. 6 Oregon’s 49-13 win. The impressive catch-and-run from Bryant Jr. saw the receiver break multiple tackles, and juke another defender with a spin move on his way to the endzone. The score gave Oregon a 35-0 lead in the second quarter, and was the fifth-straight drive that the Ducks scored on to start the game.
The Ducks’ offense took control of the game early on a 23-yard strike from Nix to Patrick Herbert. The Oregon defense was called for a pass interference penalty and allowed a big first down to put the Sun Devils within field goal range on their first drive. However, the Ducks’ defense was able to hold Arizona State to a field goal try, which was missed.
Wasting no time on their second drive of the day, the Ducks went 75 yards in five plays to get their second touchdown. A 49-yard pass from Nix to Herbert was the second time the pair connected for a score. That touchdown pass from Nix put him 13th all time in the FBS for total touchdowns, passing former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
After forcing a quick punt from Arizona State, Oregon drove down the field in its third consecutive touchdown drive to start the game, and the third touchdown of the first quarter. This one once again came on a pass from Nix, this time to Troy Franklin for a 16-yard score.
The Oregon defense continued its strong showing, forcing a Sun Devil 3-and-out. The Ducks were not able to get momentum on offense for the first part of the drive leading to the first 4th down faced by the offense all day. However, a conversion on 4th down led almost immediately to a 45-yard deep-shot from Nix to Franklin for their second touchdown connection of the first half, and Nix’s fourth overall.
Another Arizona State 3-and-out later, the Ducks got the ball back. The aforementioned 71-yard touchdown pass from Nix to Bryant Jr. on the second play of the drive expanded the Oregon lead about halfway through the second quarter.
Arizona State’s offense seemed to finally put a good drive together. Two successful 4th down conversions highlighted a 15 play, 65-yard drive for the Sun Devils that saw them get to the Oregon 21-yard-line. However, an interception thrown by Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo brought the drive to a screeching halt, and gave Oregon the ball at its own 2-yard line with about a minute left in the half.
The Ducks continued their elite offensive performance as Nix, the betting favorite for the Heisman Trophy entering the game, threw his career-high sixth touchdown pass on a 16-yard pass to Tez Johnson on a drive that went 98 yards in seven plays taking jsut 56 seconds. Oregon’s offense scored on all six of its first-half drives, and did not allow any Sun Devil points for a lopsided 42-0 halftime score.
The prolific offense from the Ducks in the first half saw multiple records broken. Troy Franklin passed Dillon Mitchell for most single-season receiving yards by a Duck, finishing the game with 128 to tally 1,221 yards on the season. Franklin also passed Josh Huff and Jeff Maehl for most receiving touchdowns in a season when he recorded his 13th touchdown catch of the season. Nix became the seventh Oregon quarterback to pass for six touchdowns in a single game. Oregon’s kicker Camden Lewis made seven extra points, which was enough to pass Royce Freeman to make Lewis the all-time leading scorer in Oregon football history.
The Ducks had their first empty drive of the game in the second half after a mishandled snap by the holder on a field goal attempt. The Sun Devils were able to capitalize by scoring their first points of the game on a field goal. Nix was replaced by Ty Thompson on the next drive.
In a much quieter half for the Oregon offense, Thompson was able to add a seventh passing touchdown for the Ducks at the beginning of the fourth quarter. A couple of scores from Arizona State late in the game made the score slightly closer, but were ultimately meaningless in the 49-13 Oregon win.
Nix ended the day with 404 passing yards and six touchdown passes and just five incomplete passes. The Ducks were led by the 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns from Troy Franklin. Bucky Irving recorded 63 rushing yards to lead all rushers in the game.
Oregon picked up its 10th win of the season and looks to take down rival No. 11 Oregon State (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) next Friday night at Autzen Stadium.
