Two men were taken into Eugene Police Department custody Tuesday night outside of the Bean East Complex after a resident saw them attempting to steal a bike from a bike rack shortly after midnight, according to Eugene police.
Officers cited Gary Lee Kehm, 28, with unlawful possession of a controlled substance after a methamphetamine pipe was found in his pocket, EPD spokeswoman Kerry Delf said.
Police charged DeWayne Philip Blewett, 29, with two counts of giving false information to an officer after he gave the DPS officers a fake identification card, Delf said. Blewett was lodged in Lane County jail and held on $60,000 bail. Blewett, who already had an outstanding warrant, previously gave false information to an office after a routine traffic stop a couple weeks ago, Delf said.
Blewett has previously been charged with forgery, possession of a controlled substance and twice with failure to appear in court.
Officers could not charge Blewett and Kehm with theft because the bike was unregistered, DPS officer Lisa Larkin said.
Bicycle theft has long been a problem on campus, with 60 bikes stolen during fall term alone, and six stolen so far this term, according to DPS statistics. A total of 250 bikes were stolen on campus in 2005.
University Department of Public Safety officers found the men attempting to steal a bike near Moore Hall and ordered them to stand down, Larkin said. DPS officers held the men until Eugene police arrived on scene.
The resident who saw the men taking the bikes called and reported them to DPS at 12:24 a.m., Delf said.
The bike was taken into DPS possession, and DPS will pass photographs of the bike in question around to residents in an attempt to find the owner. Once officers know who the bike belongs to, police can charge the men with theft, which could put them in jail for up to one year, Larkin said.
DPS officers Larkin, Royce Myers, Zach Hermens and Scott Cameron found burglary tools on the suspects but no cut bike locks, Larkin said.
