I understand the loss of someone due to traffic a accident, but that was not what Brian Reams’ death was. This was a hit and run, of an innocent person, crossing the street. Brian Reams was hit while crossing the street by a car coming around a corner, driving recklessly at night. I am hurt and insulted by Ono Olivieris’ letter to the editor (“Students should be careful when crossing Eugene’s busy streets,” ODE, March 12). Thank you Ono, for making us feel like little children with your “recommendations,” when just as many people, not just students, get hit by cars in Eugene.
I am so sorry that you lost a son, and I am sure you are still grieving, but because of this you should be sensitive to this issue and know that the letter could be hurtful, seeing as it was published just one week after my friend was taken off of life support. The entire fraternity of Beta Theta Pi, and others who are deeply affected by Brian’s’ death, deserve better treatment than a slap on the wrist and recommendations for how to learn. We are not children; we are adults, and as adults we deserve the same respect you do, Ono. When your son died, did people you did not even know lecture you on how to be a safer pedestrian? Please keep your insensitive criticism on student-pedestrian skills to yourself, or at least until it has been more than one week.
