Starting sophomore goalkeeper Anna Poponyak of the women’s lacrosse team missed practice Tuesday and will likely miss Oregon’s match against St. Bonaventure Thursday after sustaining damage to her left knee early in an 11-10 overtime loss to Baltimore, Maryland County on Sunday.
Poponyak, who started all 19 games last season as a redshirt freshman, collided into an opponent after making a save and stepping out of the crease to clear the ball 8:46 minutes into the first half against the Retrievers, coach Jen Larsen said.
“We haven’t seen it on film yet, but the two fell down in out-of-crease contact,” Larsen said.
Larsen said she and Poponyak are awaiting the results of an MRI, which will dictate what happens next.
Poponyak logged 900:47 minutes, allowed 184 goals, faced 412 shots and made 167 saves in 10 wins and nine losses last year. Through six matches this season, she’s registered 234:40 minutes, allowed 30 goals and made 26 saves.
The injury could be as simple as a hyperextension, which would keep her out for a couple of days, or as bad as a ligament tear that could require surgery and rehab, Larsen said.
“(Anna) was really doing some good things by getting our team on a roll,” said Larsen. “She is bummed right now but we’re trying to figure out a solution and the actions we need to take right now.”
