After complaints from student senators, student groups and even the dean of students about the EMU Board Room, the Student Senate is looking for a new place to stage its meetings.
“You’ve got to move from the board room,” Dean of Students Paul Shang told the Senate during its meeting Wednesday. “It’s hideous in there.”
That meeting took place in 209 Deady. Summer Senate Chairperson Nick Gower said that temporary location was chosen because Deady Hall is the only building open late enough during the summer. It is not one of the options open for the Senate’s school-year meetings, but on Wednesday senators rejected the only rooms the EMU administration offered them – the EMU Ben Linder and Walnut Rooms.
“If we have Senate in the Ben Linder Room, I’ll resign,” Sen. Demic Tipitino said. “Like, that room is the bane of my existence.”
Sen. Nick Schultz was only marginally more charitable in his assessment of the Walnut Room. “I don’t like the lighting,” Schultz said. “I don’t. It’s just kind of dark and dreary. I’m not going to resign if it’s in the Walnut Room, but I think the Ben Linder Room would be a lot more suitable.”
Senators instead proposed considering the Living Learning Center as a venue, though the Senate would have to pay to hold meetings there.
