As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but a Scene reporter must be able to work an average of 20 hours per week. A Scene reporter will cover entertainment news and write features on assigned beat areas and will be responsible for a weekly Scene section and will be specifically expected to:
- Write a minimum of 40 inches of copy per week
- Work with the Scene editor and fellow reporters to generate story ideas
- Ensure that all writing is accurate, fair, clear and complete
- Work with the Scene editor to improve writing
- Become familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Emerald style
- Ensure that all sources in the assigned beat areas are regularly (at least once a week) covered
- Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
- Finish all writing on deadline
- Contribute to the ODE Calendar of Events
- Issue blog posts, Twitter alerts and breaking stories online as necessary and as assigned. An entertainment reporter must blog at least once a week.
- Keep regular office hours
- Attend required staff meetings and weekly desk meetings
- Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed
- Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
- Contribute to supplements as needed
