The University of Oregon is switching its learning management system from Blackboard to Canvas after unanimously positive reviews were received from nearly 2000 students, 24 faculty, 38 GTFs and library and IT staff through different tests and surveys over the past months, according to blogs.oregon.edu.
Approximately 1400 schools and organizations are using Blackboard worldwide, whereas only 800 colleges are using Canvas, according to Blackboard and Canvas. So, why is UO switching over to a lesser-known product?
Frances Bronet, acting senior vice president and provost, stated in an article from Around the O that the new system will save time, improve learning outcomes and allow for mobile access.
Canvas features similar tools to Blackboard, including grade book features, e-mail communications, notifications, etc. all with greater functionality and a more user-friendly interface. Canvas also provides a free mobile interface, whereas Blackboard does not.
The University is expected to make the switch to Canvas at the beginning of spring term 2015.
