With Halloween now over, an abundance of candy is something that you might find yourself dealing with. Personally, I always manage to purchase too much candy for this strange holiday, and short of eating it all in one sad go, I find myself creating ways to use the candy for more complex treats. The following are some methods for transforming simple Halloween candy into something a little more personal.
1. Cookies – Many candies can be used as substitutes for chocolate chips. Have some packages of M&M’s lying around? Some Reese’s that can be easily broken up into chunks? Toss those into some cookie dough and bake away.
2. S’mores – This is an easy one, but also one of the best. Add Graham crackers, marshmallows and a mini Hershey bar melted together to create that unique flavor that can bring on so much camping nostalgia. But Hershey’s are not the limit – smack a Kit Kat on top of that hot marshmallow, or a Mr. Goodbar. Whether you actually manage to get a fire, or are attempting a smaller version of “urban camping” with a candle, most chocolate candy can be turned into a s’more.
3. Pie crust – Candies that are more dry, such as Oreos or other cookies, can be crushed together in a pie tin to make the crust of a pie or cake. There’s not much better than a cheesecake with an Oreo crust.
4. Milk shake – Malted milk-based candies, like Whoppers, make an excellent addition to milkshakes. Crush the candies into a find powder and add to the beverage, or simple throw them into the blender with the milk and ice cream.
5. Decoration – It’s hard to re-purpose hard candy like Skittles, lollipops and gumdrops, but not impossible. Such things make perfect decorating medium for cupcakes, cakes, cookies and other sweets. Jazz up a batch of frosted cupcakes with heaps of Sour Patch Kids for a surprising kick.
