The new-look Ducks defeated Southern Oregon 76-55 in Oregon’s lone pre-season tune-up.
The Ducks dominated throughout the entire game as the Raiders were sloppy, lethargic and failed to get into rhythm. Oregon’s offense had its way with the Raiders with four Ducks scoring in double-figures.
Oregon shooters combined to go 11-25 from 3-point range with most of Oregon’s scoring coming in transition off of Raiders’ misses. Southern Oregon finished shooting just 33% percent from the field. The Ducks’ height advantage and talent disparity was obvious.
Phillipina Kyei led the Ducks with seven rebounds and added three blocked shots.
Grace VanSlooten, who finished with a team-high plus-minus of +33, showed off her improved shooting touch by connecting on her first two 3-point attempts of the year.
“Grace has really been working on that phase of her game,” Oregon head coach Kelly Graves said. “She’s going to need to make that shot, and she can, it looked good.”
Oregon’s main struggles came late in the contest with the Ducks’ newcomers getting significant playing time. Oregon – which averaged 12.1 turnovers a game last year – finished Sunday’s game with 20 turnovers.
“It felt like we kind of quit playing,” Graves said. “I was just disappointed with how we finished the game, but the unit that’s going to play the majority of the time, I thought we looked pretty good.”
The Ducks’ sloppiness led to the Raiders scoring the game’s last 12 points.
“There at the end quite frankly we wanted to let them play through it,” Graves said. “There were times where we had four freshmen on the floor, five new kids, and it looked like it from time to time.”
Aside from the turnovers and late sloppiness, Oregon’s offense was dominant. The Ducks starters combined to shoot 50% from the field.
Transfer Peyton Scott tallied 14 points and added stout defense as well as four steals of her own.
“Peyton, I thought played great,” Graves said. “She really gives us that toughness at the other end.”
Oregon’s new faces shined. Freshman Sofia Bell showed off her touch throughout the game adding ten points and four assists while playing stout defense.
“She likes to play that end of the court,” Graves said of Bell. “She’s versatile too. She can guard three or four positions.”
With their lone exhibition in the rear-view mirror, the Ducks will now set their sights on a Nov. 6, opening-night matchup with Northern Arizona.
