Head coach Melyssa Lombardi wanted her Ducks to start fast. With a bevy of games this weekend taking place over 3,000 miles away from Eugene in Clearwater, Florida, Oregon failed to do that Thursday evening as Indiana’s two-way player Brianna Copeland’s four RBIs and 5.1 innings of two-run ball were too much for the Ducks to overcome.
Stevie Hansen struggled to settle in as Indiana immediately jumped on the Ducks with Copeland driving in Cora Bassett on an RBI triple to score the game’s first run. After recording a pair of easy outs, sophomore Avery Parker hit a two-out single to score Bassett from third.
A speedy Oregon team immediately showed off its wheels as Kai Luschar legged out an infield single and stole the first of what is sure to be many bases before being driven in by an Emma Kauf sac-fly.
Hansen’s second inning of work didn’t fare much better as with two outs in the inning an untimely error and infield base-hit set up Copeland again, this time in three-run fashion as the junior blasted a homer to dead-center making it 5-1 in the second inning.
Oregon immediately responded with Alyssa Daniell driving in KK Humphrey’s on a two-run homer.
With Indiana starting pitcher Heather Johnson only facing the Ducks’ lineup once, the Hoosiers quickly turned to Copeland in the circle who finished the game, dominating a powerful Ducks offense throughout.
With Hansen’s night abruptly finished after two innings, Lombardi turned to Reaegan Breedlove to begin the third inning.
After both teams recorded scoreless frames, Indiana’s top-of-the-order struck again with two outs as Taylor Minnick hit a two-run double to extend Indiana’s lead back to four. The Hoosiers finished the game 5-12 with two outs, six of their seven RBI’s came with two outs.
Oregon got a run back but Copeland stranded two by striking out Emma Kauf to end the fourth inning. The Ducks timely hitting faltered throughout as they failed to capitalize on six Hoosiers walks
Freshman Taylour Spencer came in for Breedlove and recorded two scoreless innings in her first collegiate action.
A Luschar fielder’s-choice drove in Daniell, but most of Oregon’s clutch hitting was nowhere to be found. The Ducks had plenty of opportunities but finished the game 0-8 with runners in scoring position and just 1-16 with runners on base.
Morgan Scott relieved Spencer and threw a scoreless seventh inning, Kauf’s leadoff walk served as the Ducks’ only base-runner in the seventh inning.
Luschar walked twice after only recording three a year ago.
Oregon’s first test of a long weekend on the East Coast came as a disappointment, the Ducks will look to bounce back Friday against Kansas and Liberty at 2 and 5 p.m.
