It was all Oregon once again as the Ducks finished their fall campaign with an emphatic 28-10 victory over the Western Oregon Raiders in 12 innings.
Oregon’s pitching was solid once again. Taylour Spencer started the game for the Ducks as Spencer, Raegan Breedlove, Elise Sokolsky, and Stevie Hansen each threw three innings for Oregon.
Striking out four, Sokolsky– who pitched sparingly in 2023 – was particularly effective on Sunday for Oregon.
“It was nice just to see her go,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said after the game. “You could see how much her ball moves, I was pumped to get her three innings today.”
Western Oregon’s total runs were deceptive. The Raiders scored their first run of the game on a second inning single, the rest of the Raiders’ runs would come during innings in which a runner began the inning on base in order to give the hitting team a chance to practice situational hitting. Oregon’s pitchers allowed just two earned runs on the day and just five throughout the fall.
“Big picture, I thought we had a really really good fall,” Lombardi said. “You can see we’ve got a lot of different weapons, you could see we are new in some spots and whatnot. But just overall, I’m pleased with what we did in the fall.”
Offensively, Emma Kauf finished a home run away from the cycle. A first-inning RBI triple got the Ducks going and Oregon would not let up as 13 different Ducks tallied RBIs.
“I thought they just got better and better with what they did,” Lombardi said. “I thought they got more aggressive in counts, understood key situations and what they were wanting to do.”
KK Humphreys, Katie Flannery, Alyssa Daniell, Remmington Hewitt and Ariel Carlson all added homers for the Ducks, Carlson’s coming in grand fashion.
With such a large lead, Oregon was able to get its newcomers significant playing time.
Freshman Ayanna Shaw went 4-4 on Sunday. She showcased her blazing speed by stealing six bags over the span of the fall.
Faces new and old combined to dominate the fall for Oregon. Junior Kai Luschar finished the fall batting .619 and stole 12 bases in the process.
The Ducks now turn their sights to their final season in the Pac-12, looking to win the “Conference of Champions” one final time.
“This team is hungry,” Lombardi said. “This team does not like that we were two games away last year.”
